Back in my teenage days, lol, I swear I could keep up with 5 or 6 at a time. Now I can barely do one. :o)

Back in the day (well, ok a year ago when I did nothing but that) I could handle 5 or 6 IM's, as well as a Skype conversation, and email conversations with about 10 people.

If I'm really into a conversation... I can really only handle one at a time... I guess two or three is my limit if conversation is minimal.
I totally hear you with the teenager thing. I think I could have five to ten of those windows open... tick tick ticking away and managing to not say the wrong thing to the wrong person!
I'm getting ooooooold!

well if im having a serious convo. then only one, two at most. But, im a teenager (16) and i can handle about 5

I can usually handle four or five at a time, but I've always been pretty decent with multi-tasking. However, that rarely happens anymore unless half my cousins are online at once (we are spread out all along the eastern seaboard).

One. I'm an old man. I find myself getting annoyed when another IM pops up.
Having had experiences where all six were mad at me for not giving them full attention, I quit chat for a while, then came back as invisible so I could pick and choose. Cruel, I know.

I can do two if I put my mind to it. But I don't even like to do that. I feel like I'm being rude. Like I'm disrespecting both the people I'm conversing with by not giving either of them my full attention. I wouldn't try to talk to two people at once in the real world, so I don't do it on IM either. It's kind of a big courtesy thing for me.

I can handle one, maybe two. My wife however can hold 6-7, and nobody knows she's talking to anybody but them, it's kinda disturbing.

The most I've been able to handle is 7. I'm good at multi tasking :)
