The first few will be awkward and difficult. They could be heavy or light, painful or no pain at all. They're just getting themselves accustomed. I would get some pads with wings and put them on your knickers just in case it starts to get heavier. This should last for 5-7 days. When they get into a pattern, you'll know what kind of pads to use when and if you'll want to wear tampons. For now, don't panic, use pads, don't wear white trousers (afraid so!) and sit it out. Read round sites on the net from girls your age. When I got my first one I went ballistic! I was at a boarding school and got allowed home as I was making such a fuss. They are a big deal!

The period can last anywhere from 3-7 days (these are normal amount of days for a woman to have her period) but because this is your first period you may notice some heaviness for a day or so as the body tries to adjust to the changes going on inside.

I have the link to a couple of sites that may be of even more help. One is at: http://www.always.com (if outside the U.S. click on the U.S. section and it will take you to information about the periods)

The other is at: http://www.girlshealth.gov

Please also talk to your mom for even more information.

To repeat what everyone else is saying... TALK TO YOUR MOM! She probably wants to help. If you can't here's some advice:

1. My first period only lasted four days and wasn't that heavy.
2. I used tampons the second day (pads grossed me out), but most people don't. Don't feel pressured to, but don't feel like you can't.
3. I had cramps. bad. Take motrin and use a heating pad.
4. Everyone is different. There are no set rules for flow or length.

I hope this eased some of your fears/nerves. But please tell an adult.

honey, this is all dependent on you and your history. I am not sure if this is true but I know in my family my sisters and I have similar periods, long, heavy and painful. Don't be scared about it, its natural. Your periods could be light and not painful. It just all depends. Your period will be irregular when you first start, but it will become regular later on. No worries...welcome to womanhood.
