I'm interested in visiting Athens, but I'm a little concerned about safety? How safe would it be for a 17 year old, British male? I take the usual precautions and obviously don't go looking for trouble, I keep myself to myself. I dunno if dress would be an issue, I wear tight jeans, fairly bright t shirts, etc, this can sometimes cause a problem with "chavs" in the UK who are looking for trouble. Is this a concern in Athens, and Greece in general?

Thanks

You should be just fine as long as you avoid the huge crowds and anything that has "KKE" (Greek Communist Party) on it. Europeans usually have it easier there than Americans. There looking at some of the local styles.

a million. "particularly severe violence occuring particularly frequently": it isn't so. you experience very probability-free once you bypass round Athens. for sure, further and extra there are incidents, of thefts and robberies, specially to older human beings. this is unhappy, yet you do not experience like this is a well-known occurrence. It basically is a wonder that this stuff ensue, in a society that not in any respect had such incidents. 2. "demanding surroundings" : there is not any such problem. Muggings are completely not likely to ensue, except you bypass in a suspicious neighbourhood the position hookers and those who take drugs carry close out etc. on my own late at nighttime, and that is a particular area so you might maintain away from (Omonoia and Koumoundourou sq.). nonetheless, i might want to bypass from there without being afraid, and that i 'm a woman, it would want to easily be ugly. 3. in case you retain away from particular parts, that you'll tell basically by ability of passing from there, late at nighttime, back outfits would not be counted. also, do not get occupied with a strive against of any kind in golf equipment etc. 4. Athens is way safer than different eu capitals. this is reminiscent of Rome and Madrid, in case you exclude %.-pocketing, this is basically too a lot in Spain and Italy, we do no longer have it in Athens basically about in any respect. nonetheless, save a pay attention for that once you're in a crowded bus or sth. 5. overall, Athens feels very probability-free and comfortable, as does all of Greece. You straight away experience you're probability-free in a city like that, everybody is everywhere, they bypass out at nighttime, so that you do not finally end up remoted, and this is amazingly effective. do not problem in any respect, come over and basically be careful for obtrusive issues, a similar way you'd be careful in everywhere contained in the international. What i can inform you for a actuality is that Athens is way safer than London.

Athens is pretty safe... MUCH safer than a large English city. The only real dangers are the traffic and the pick pockets!

Omonoia Square is kind of creepy at night, and drug users/dealers proliferate there, but no one will bother you unless you bother them, and I've never felt scared walking there. You're only likely to get in trouble somewhere if you get drunk and annoy someone. And if that happens, you'll feel like home, because there's a good chance that the "someone" will be English! (Well, ok, that's more true in the islands, but still...)

More or less safe - some areas are of course less safe than other, i.e the area around Omonia square. Or you might want to mind your bag / wallet in the streets or in public transport, but I guess this is a common disadvantage of living in a big city.
As for the dress code, no problem - only the clubs have crowds with specific dress codes and these vary.

My husband and I brought our daughter there when she was six months old. We felt completely safe and found the people to be extremely friendly. I walked around by myself some at night and never had any problems. We have traveled all over Europe and Greece is one of our favorites. As far as your dress goes, you've just described half of the guys we saw in Greece. As long as you’re not looking for trouble I don't think you'll find it.

You'll be fine! When I went, I actually met a lot of British people who live in Athens. The people are nice and generally don't go looking for a fight.

I actually read somewhere that Greece has the lowest crime rate in Europe and second lowest in the world, of course that doesnt mean everyone is an angel but compared to most cities Athens is SAFE!!

No problem whatsoever. Just don't drink too much, because that can make you say or do things that you don't want to, and that can make you "go looking for trouble".

What does KKE have to do with anything?

No problem whatsoever - just don't bother the locals (fight in a drunken state - as we see on the news)
Your dress sense makes no difference to Greeks.
