Thats a good question. Numbers have existed since the beginning of time. Before they were thought of as numbers, fingers were used to represent numbers. For example, if a farmer had 4 sheep and he wanted to tell another farmer, then he would say, "I have this many sheep" and hold one finger for each sheep (4 fingers). Based on this system, the roman numeral system was invented. But shortly thereafter, the wises arabs invented a number system identical to the modern number system, the only difference being that the numbers were represented by different symbols. Then, shortly after that, the Ancient Indians invented the 0 (zero). Before that there was no 0. There are some reports that say that the Mayans may have actually invented the 0 completely independently from the Indians, but even if that were confirmed, then they still came after the Indians. When I say Indians, I mean India. Hope this helps!
