As a former bacteriologist, i would have to recommend that you NOT drink that water. You would have to let that water run for at least 5 minutes to reduce the bacterial load coming from the filter (there is one i hope). Your hardware or home supply store (ACE, Lowes, Home Depot, etc) will set you up with the right one and even tell you the best way to install it. They are typically good for about 4-6 months of daily use. Less if used as a main source of supply water.
A suggestion would be to install something like PUR faucet filter and refrigerate a pitcher or two for drinking, etc..

No and don't use the ice either!.... Follow the hose to the valve and turn it off right away! Then go to the filter and hold the top part of the filter casing and turn the bottom(if it is that kind) It is probably going to be hard to turn so becareful so you don't break anything. When you get it loose some water is going to spill out(that's ok) take it to the sink and take the filter out and dump out the excess water and wipe out the inside of the container.... Go to the store and buy some more filters and change them every three months(max.)

Get yourself a filter my friend. First bleed all the impurities out as best you can. Use a milk jug (gallon) and fill it at least 4 times. Then and only then, install a ( I recommend PUR) high quality filter. Once installed you'll need to bleed the system the same way again but this time for air.
I hope the family is well and not (i doubt it) affected by the unfiltered water consumption.
Hope this helped.
Good luck.

If water is still running through it, yes it is. That is just for catching any larger particles like calcium deposits that break loose and might clog up the tiny lines inside the fridge.

YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
go on line for manufactures directions, and follow them before you drink!
Also, if you can run a liquid like hydrogen peroxide, or a chemical especially made for cleaning the lines....DO IT SEVERAL TIMES!!!!!!! before drinking Please!
