Men and women both can sometimes be seen as sex objects, that is the inherent nature of sexuality is it not? But some (prostitutes, porn actors, exotic dancers) go out of their way to BECOME sex objects. Why do they do this? Is it to make money or are they driven by an inner urge of some kind?

There's a difference between being sexy and a sex object.

A person who is sexy is in the end a PERSON. No matter how sexy they are, there is more to them than that. I would think it is understandable why people would want to be sexy - it means being desirable in at least one way. Attractive. Humans are, after all, social animals.

A sex object, on the other hand, is almost necessarily an un-person. Objects have no say in their use, and often have little or no use outside the one for which they are intended.

While I think many people (perhaps close to all of them) would like to be sexy, I don't know any mentally healthy person who wants to be an OBJECT.

In a culture like ours, which objectifies sexuality, anyone can be a sex object. Not necessarily by choice. But as for those who chose an occupation or lifestyle which encourages objectification, there is probably no single answer. Some (but definitely not all) engage in such work out of desparation - they see no other way to make money, or are manipulated into engaging in this activity by those who have some power or control over them. Some are able to detach themselves from their objectification and see it as a quick way to make cash - it's more of their own choosing. Some are genuinely exhibitionists; some perhaps have tied up their feelings of self-worth in the fact that they can be "admired" and desired for their sexuality. I suspect the narcissistic bent is more common in men who engage in this type of activity than women, but that's just my supposition - I can't point you to a study which confirms this. Like so many question, no simple answer.

No, I would NOT say that is the inherent nature of sex, and I would definitely say that women are objectified much more in our culture.
