I would start by finding an established group to go with on investigations. If they are serious about what they do and not a "social club" then they will welcome any help offered. The link below should allow you to find a group in your area.

That said just because a group is established doesn't mean they have good procedures. I would pay close attention to what they do and how they do it with an eye toward making it better. After maybe three investigations (learn the basics first) then you can start offering suggestions to the group.
I would also read some books on investigating the paranormal also with a critical eye for flaws and what could be improved. I listed two basic books to start with below.

Also it is important to know your skills and where you might be the most useful. Are you an excellent photographer or can you easily interview people without asking them leading question? In other words what do you bring to the table? Answering that question will help you with deciding what approach you should take to investigating.

Please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss this matter further.

If you are really serious about this and I would never try this alone for the first time nor would I ever say to do this without a partner with your same beliefs in the Paranormal.
I have done this work for many years now and I would say to try and find a real group of Paranormal Investigators and not ones that think of this as a joke and go where they should not tread before. Anytime we get newbies into our group we talk alot first so they can get to know us we know them. We always talk alot about how we do things and we answer their questions also and we go out into the field, one of our more experienced investigators are with them and we encourage them how to take their own pictures at first. We as a group talk about that investigation before we go or we usually meet at my house if we don't have a chance before leave.
It can sometimes be very scary but after duing it for awhile, we will talk and see if this investigation is where we need more people we will usually tell the person we are doing the investigation for that we need to set up another night to do a larger researh and we leave and then we leave. We always make a date to come back and we always follow through and then all are safe and we have an excellent investigation. Just a short few months ago, we got the most beautiful full bodied female and 2 others in the same Pic but they were not full bodied. For all of us it is worth every bit of time we put into it.
So, please check out some groups and you will know right away whose not fake or not. Never go alone!!
Well, I hope you find a great group. We are located in Ann Arbor, Michigan but they are all over. Good Luck with your desire in doing Paranormal work. It really is worth it and don't let the ones who come here just to put us down. That is the only reason why they come to the Paranormal. We just laugh at them as we know the truth.

Any older part of town, an old folks home or a veterans memorial is a likely place to look for the paranormal. Ask elders in your community about any famous legends like lovers who reunite on a bridge a house that no one can remember anyone living in and try taping the sounds and listen for "voices" or try taking pinhole pictures (use an oatmeal box and photo sensitive paper) expose the paper through the pin hole develop it and see what shows - you can use a digital camera but they are so easily manipulated many people prefer real film be use and different techniques applied for best evidence. I caution against any seance or Ouija because these can open doors to the spirit realm and are more scary than they are worth. Good Luck!

Grave yards are where most get their start at. Visit haunted places near you. You don't have to have a lot of expensive equipment. A camera and tape recorder is what a lot of people start out with.

You want to be aware of everything around you and develop you own ability to sense things. There are many websites and books to help you get started .

As others have sugested find a group in your area to go with.Psie mentioned The Paranormal Investgator's Handbook which is an excellent book and see my other suggestions below.

Its undemanding. All you like is the means to purchase 4 trouble-free kit. First an emf meter, approximately $35, then a digital recorder, approximately $40 at walmart then a cam corder. And a digital camera. And now you're set to bypass. i began out with 2 recorders 2, incredibly much less costly, emf meters and an previous 8mm video digital camera. Then when I went to three cemetaries and shown them the photos I have been given they had to bypass as nicely. think of of a acceptance, one thats hasnt been taken. they get kinda pissy once you think of of a acceptance already used. And undergo in suggestions that's a self concept field. So there incredibly are not any "specialists" in line with-say. have relaxing. hit upon and do what you think of is optimal. Watch some shows of ghost hunters or some thing to get a experience for it. Then Do "yo thang"! lol have relaxing digital mail me for any questions .. identity like to help ya out.

well Amanda, Psie, has already given you a great answer. before you run out and buy anything, find a reputable group in your area and see if they are taking in new members. if they are, go to their meetings and see if you can tag along to see if you even want to persue this any further. If you decide to continue, then you can figure out where you fit in and whats your best talent. Then go from there with buying equipment. Keep in mind, there is no money to be made, and the equipment can run as much as 2,000.00 for good reliable stuff. Only you can decide whats right for you. But stay away from unprofessional groups, ask for their bylaws and rules. if they dont have any, keep on looking.

I think you have to look for some old people, because older people for instance people who are seventy or eight year old, they know many things about astonishing things.
My grand mother always told us about astonishing things that really happen with her in her youth.
Good luck.

With yourself. Ask yourself why you need to believe in the paranormal.
