find the maintianance manual that came with the machine. Find the little screwdriver that also came with the machine.

Down the needle bar is a little button knob with screwdriver slot in it. Loosen this and the piece of the old needle will come out. Watch the needle to see which side the flat part is inserted. Put the new needle in just that way and tighten the little button with the screwdriver.

Right on the side of the piece the needle is inserted into there should be a small finger screw of some sort. You just unscrew until the old needle falls out. You may want to hold what is left of the needle while unscrewing so you can see which side the flat part of the needle is on. Just make sure you reinsert the new needle with the flat side facing the same direction and pushed up as far into the holder as it will go. Then tighten the screw back up and you are good to go.

You're right, the $100 sewing machine (like from Walmart)(maybe a Singer) would do the basics. So then buy some Singer bobbins. Regarding the needles look on the package as usually in a package comes a few different sizes and it will say like one size is for cottons, another is for stretchable fabric, another for silks (and then some are for leather, some are for heavy upholstery fabrics). So a package of the 3 mixed sizes would be good for beginners. If you use the wrong needle for a certain fabric the needle will break (might get stuck in the machine too) so when she decides what material she wants to sew with buy a bunch of those kinds of needles. The thread is polyester over cotton as she would probably be working with polyester material, and you can get her some thread (larger spools) of white and black for starters. (we wear a lot of white or black clothes, but when she decides what pattern she wants and buys the material she can get a large thread that color and then put some on a bobbin, then sew). I doubt if she will be using a buttonholer for a long while (since she'll probably be working with stretchable fabric) but a couple pair of scissors would be nice. I like Simplicity patterns (Walmart has a fabric center and patterns) for like a top or a shift or slacks or pajamas. She will see on the back of the pattern what to buy, if it's slacks it may require elastic.

There should be a little screw on the left hand side of the shank that holds the needle. You unscrew that.

Be sure to take notice of which way the groove in the needle is facing as you need to replace it with the groove facing the same way. Hold the needle in the shank and rescrew. You shouldn't need a screw driver to loosen and tighten.... but make sure you tighten as hard as you can with your fingers.

Usually there is a screw at the top of the needle. You loosen it and the needle slides down. Then you insert the new needle back into the machine and tighten the screw.

There should be a little butterfly shaped screw to the right of the needle a little bit above the base, rotate it counter-clockwise, and the needle will fall out, replace with a new needle and tighten the screw.

Hi! Not sure which model you have but most needles have a lever in the back that you can lift and this will release the needle. Then you will need to replace it by placing the needle in the same place and then push the lever down to lock it. If all else fails try to find your owner's manual!! Good luck!

The little knob/screw above the pressure foot......turn it and pull down on the needle.............put a new one in turning screw the opposite way so it will stay in.
