Yes, I love the UK and would happily lay down my life defending the greatest country on earth. However, I say that sitting in my nice cosy warm house. Send me into a battle and the answer may be different, but I'd like to think I'd have the courage to do the right thing.

I love the idea of my country, more than the country itself. As an American who spends a lot of the year overseas, I find myself in the uncomfortable position of defending some of the more obscure and radical actions of my country.
Would I lay down my life for my country? It depends on the circumstances. As Gilbert Chesterton once said, " 'My country, right or wrong' is a thing no patriot would ever think of saying except in a desperate case. It is like saying 'My mother, drunk or sober."
(I expect the thumbs down to roll out!)
Cheers.

Every generation of my family since the Boer War has had at least one member serving in the armed forces. Some of whom died for their country and one got gassed at Gallipoli.
The only circumstances I would not fight for my country is if the government were Fascist - then I would consider it my patriotic duty to fight them.

Yes but not on the orders of this corrupt, conscienceless
New Labour Government.
We are only involved in the current wars, because Blair wanted to prove that his cojones were as big as Maggies and
unfortunately they are not. (He's probably putting up his
outside Christmas lights as we speak!!)
Our continued involvement is purely and simply, a face saving exercise which they see as a better alternative, to admitting that they were wrong.
The fact that saving their face is costing lives is obviously of
little or no concern to them.

"History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid"..... Franklin D Roosevelt
The political climate has nothing to do with whether or not I feel my sacrifice is justified. "A soldier is not a politician" It has to do with the threat threat my country faces and if I have the fortitude to stand up for what is right and , lay down my life if need be.
..... Absolutely
