It is true that there are lots who are left alone with no visits from family and friends. And depression is rampant. My own mom took her life at 52. Not sure what the rate is.But whatever it is, is too high!

The last figures I have are from 2002. At that time, the suicide rate for Seniors was 15.6 persons in every 100,000.
It was known that 70% of these persons had visited their primary physician in the 30 day period before their death. Many of them did suffer depression.
At that time, Seniors, 65 and over, had the highest suicide rate, with teens 15 - 24 coming in second.

There have been reports on the news about elderly couples who through illness one of them is either near death or needs to be put into a Care Home or Nursing Home and because they don't want to be seperated they help each other to die. This is really sad and it makes me weep whenever I see it in the news.
There are a lot of people who live on their own who come onto this site for company and friendship so that they don't feel so alone in this vast world. It is better than getting involved with people in the outside as there are a lot of unscrupulous people who are ready to take advantage of elderly people. We don't know how high the suicide rate is for elderly people but it is the same as teenagers who do it or kids who get bullied at school.....one is too many! No-one should be driven to suicide through the actions of another.

I have heard and even read the same thing you have asked about. I believe that suicide rate with the seniors are either number or number 2, with the other being in their teens. I am looking forward to any answer you get.

Don't know the stat's but your examples are things that can be overcome ,remain busy and active all your life. In our family we have Alzheimers on one side and Parkinsons on the other side. These are incurable , and the quality of life is greatly decreased .We've had family members take this action since the idea of being in a vegative state is even more appaling.

I am afraid the rate is higher than we would like. But here in this country we do NOT treat our Seniors we the RESPECT other societies do. They end up without anyone, no home etc.
all alone.... sad...

I don't know stats but I have a dear friend who is now contemplating it. She is partially paralyzed, confined to a wheelchair and can no longer do anything for herself. Her mind is still good and she has always been a very active person. It must be sheer hell for her. She has begged me to help her but as much as I love her, I just can't.

The rate is 100%, for all types -- it's the ultimate result of all struggles towards immortality. (though unintentional in most cases)

Well, tonight its been "contemplating death"
"How do we want our funeral
to be"
and now,"how many of us are
going to take the easy way out?"
Is it a full moon, or are these
kids just trying to depress us
more.
