"Old habits die hard" means that you must invest considerable effort in completely annihilating heavily entrenched 'habits'. Although you may think you've "killed" a habit, in times of stress, you may find it rising like a phoenix from the ashes .

It's a cliche like 'you can't teach old dogs new tricks.' People's behaviour doesn't change overnight and their 'old habits' are going to take a long time to change or 'die hard'.

what a person is used to doing over and over. take the way you sit. some people sit with their legs crossed everytime they sit. it's a habit----------get it?
