The difference is ...
"Trekker" = devoted fans of the shows and movies, but still with their head grounded in reality in that they most likely have jobs, families, etc. and that's where their life is based, not in the show.
"Trekkie" = the lunatic fringe of the fan base, more grounded in fantasy than in reality ... in some cases, Trek IS their reality. For example, they may think they really do have a chance of spending a night of passion with Uhura or Seven of Nine.

Originally, the term, "Trekker" is usually applied towards fans of The Original Series, with Kirk and all that and a "Trekkie" was one who aligned himself with The Next Generation.
However, now, they've both pretty much taken on the same meaning, i.e. fan of Star Trek. However, Trekker is still used for mostly TOS people.
I consider myself a Trekkie :D
Besides, Trekker sounds stupid.

A Trekkie is under 30, Trekkor over 30. They both need to get a life.
On various Star Trek boards the participants seem to attach some sort of significance to Trekkor and are insulted by Trekkie. Others say that Trekkor means you are a Star Trek Connoisseur and have risen above pimply-faced Star Trek Fan without a girlfriend.
But back in the 60-'s 70's when the phrase was coined, this is what it meant: Trekkie, under 30, too young to realize they are wasting their life, over 30, Trekkor, doesn't care whether they are wasting their life.
Not that there is anything wrong with wasting your life on Star Trek trivia. It is your life, after all.

A trekker would be someone on a pilgrimage or trek. A trekky is a Star Trek fiend who has taken things to extremes.
