It should be obvious that I wasn't refering to shoes being unshined, or hair messed up since I mentioned a biologist! I'm talking about looks you were born with.

He/she ( the biologist) is likely referring to an advantage of attractiveness as a biological advantage in any animal species.

The peacock with the best feathers end up mating with the females and therby propagating his genepool. Even the best looking slug share this same advantage, the best toad, the best hyena.

I am reminded of a great line in a movie: "Let him rave on that men may know him mad." The truth is, most people are not here asking sincere questions and soliciting helpful answers. They have an agenda and they are seeking validation. So they choose the answer that validates them. Makes them feel better in their own bigotry. Hence, the line from the movie above. When they choose the worst answer, which answer reflects their own ignorance or bigotry, both the asker and the "best answerer" are merely showing their colors. They are raving on. We will know them mad. Yes? So let the criteria be. So that they can rave on. Hannah J Paul

Kitty hit the nail right on the head. You may be smart, pretty and have a great personality but your looks is what leaves the first and lasting impression about yourself with people. I have 46 years experience as a Hiring Manager and Non-Verbal signs speak louder than a Resume, College transcript and letter of recommendation. To list a few examples: shoes - dirty? Unshined? Brand new? Worn beyond reasonable state? Each one of these tells me a lot about the person wearing them. Nails - clean? dirty? Bitten? Unpollished? Wavy lines on them? Not well kept? Again, says a bundle about the owner. Hair - I love this one. Dirty? Messy? Dandruff flaking? Tangles uncombed? Flat matted? Over sprayed? Still wet? Roots showing different color than the hair itself? Again, tell tale signs that speak very loudly. Haven't you heard the line "First impression is a lasting impression."? That's what they are talking about. I try to associate one of this non-verbal features with everyone I interview. Later when they call or meet me somewhere and remind me I interviewed them, I attempt to remember them from the "loud" non-verbal impression I have of that person. Has never failed me for over 46 years. Learned all this from a little old man when he told me I would be a good Hiring Manager because of my observation skills. Then he trained me to observe and interpret the way one talks, walks, moves, sits, stands, enters and leaves a room, expresses gratitude, shakes hands (biggest tell tale of all). Understand now?

Hmm, maybe they meant that the way you look has had an impact on who you are insde. For example, if people thought you were ugly and treated you like that you may have a different personality, confidence level etc than someone who was always thought as beautiful. Also, people that have had a disfigurement, or someone with large breasts etc would think differently about themselves, and also from other people so it does change who you are inside?

I read that response, and I understand what he meant by that, but I wholeheartedly disagree. Clearly, your physical appearance is a part of "the whole package"...but it has nothing to do with the fundamental self, "who you REALLY are". Who you really are is determined by things much more important than physical appearance.

Then again, I believe there is something more to human beings than just billions of cells...I guess someone's stance on this matter depends on whether or not they believe in any kind of...soul...

My guess, since he was a biologist, was he was referring to our genes. Example - I have my grandmothers eyes, my fathers lips and teeth, my mothers ankles and knees, my uncles neck, etc. Every part of us, from our appearances to genetic medical condtions are passed on to us biologically. Also, our personality and behaviors are influenced by our parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, etc. - so - if you are raised in an environment of well-groomed people, you will most likely look well-groomed and put together - "attractive". If you are raised without much help or are surrounded by people who don't care about appearances or are slovenly, you may look like a ruffian - and act like one as well. On both of these levels, "looks are part of who you are".

It means that your looks reflect on you, in ur mage u can what kind of a person u are, for example, if ur pretty but ur hair is messy and ur face is dirty, it means ur a type of person that takes their looks for granted and is not concerned to look completely nice. And some people use their looks to their advantage like by flurting, when u know ur pretty, you can get what you want. Its like seeing a pretty girl, but with bad teeth, that shows u are a person with very bad higiene. its the same way you can tell about a person looking at their room or their belongings.

I think it's basically just some kind of crap that the answerer used to sound smart, but I suppose it could be interperated in many different ways.

Like maybe that a person's looks can actually reflect who they are inside, because they are a product of not only their ancestors, but also of their experiences.

I believe that ever person looks exactly how they were meant to look.

I know the question you are referring to, and I expect the person who answered it will confirm what he meant if he sees this question.

The previous answer talking about Peacock feathers was spot on.

Your looks are part of who you are - of course, just like your height, your weight, your body mass index, and everything else.

The statement isn't a value judgment, it is a simple concise statement of fact. And that is probably why it was picked as best answer.

basically how you look has a lot to do with genetics, nowadays you can use surgery make up and so to either alter or show up certain features but all in all your looks is akin to your personality. Its for the most part unchangeable and is something that you had little control over to begin with
