Compaq and HP are two brands owned by HP, and from a reliability standpoint are going to be identical.
Judging from the results in PC Magazine's 20th annual service and reliability survey of its customers, Dell is a bit more reliable than HP, but not by much. Both brands have their share of problems - the only major brand that does better than both in PC desktops is Sony.

The top 5 power laptops are HP, Gateway, Acer, Toshiba, and Dell according to PC World. I think Dell Latitudes rock. The biggest problem is that service constantly changes. It depends on who picks up the phone. At least all of the above mentioned brands have replacement policies for defective units. Also - computers are commodities which are constantly changing. Hard to predict reliability. That Dell you bought a while ago isn’t even made anymore. I typically stop be a store like staples or best buy, check stuff out, then find a better price online.

As another responder indicated, HP and Compaq are both really HP. HP just kept the Compaq name for branding.
Between Dell and HP, both systems are stable. I have had more issues with Dells at work, but only when initially getting them setup. For some reason the Dell server power supplies occasionally seem to give a problem. Fortunately Dell is very responsive in getting us a replacement and they, like the HPs tend to run well for many years.
Oh, why not consider a Lenova desktop too? They offer some decent systems and often offer them at a lower cost.

If you are buying a desktop computer then if your budget is between $500-$1000... then buy a compaq... but just make sure that your graphics card has more than a 64mb dedicated memory (this will mean better graphics when playing games) This is not RAM or Hard disk space -- this is graphics memory so don't confuse these things... =)
If your budget is $1000-$2500 go with an HP just make sure the graphics are above 64MB
If your budget is over $2500 then go with a dell H2C 720 -- Alienware makes them and they are really good computers.. cheap dells are trash though becuase they overheat after long intense gaming

Compaq is a type of HP. But to answer your question compaqs are a little on the slow side, they are decent computers for there costs. HPs are nice but they are designed weird. Go for the HP I have never had a dell before I have no idea what they are like.

Hi, Dell PC's r excellent in quality and Dell offers good customer support as well. Your second choice should be an Hp. Hp isn't bad either. Both brands r good value for the money. I hope I helped.
Good Luck and take care!

HP and Compaq are the same company. Kind of like Chevrolet and Pontiac.
I have 3 Dells. I wouldn't recommend getting one with a slim line chassis, buy the big ugly bulky chassis. Both of my 4x00 slim line units had issues - I think due to not being able to dissipate heat properly.

Doesn't matter about the brand. You need a decent processor, at least 2 GB of ram. 120 GB hard drive, a decent video card. Wifi and blue tooth. And any other external component you might want.

Of those three, definitely Dell. HP and Compaq will never meet the quality and functionality of a Dell.
