i am 18 weeks pregnant as of tomorrow. my question is basically "can you "lose" you baby and not know it?" and by that i mean can your baby die inside you and not know it? I think i am too far along to actually call it a miscarriage, but i have heard of people goin to the doctor and there not being a heartbeat. and they never knew anything! i am scared because i still have not felt any movement! I have no bleeding nor any cramping what so ever. please help calm my nerves thanks

my next dr. appt is dec 10, i have a reg ob visit then a visit with maternal fetal medicine at the hosp. cause my pregnancy is considered high risk. earlier this year i was pregnant, and the baby had a disease called limb body stalk. a horrible horrible disease. there is 0% chance of survival it ended up dyin inside me at 16 weeks. it was abnormally small so i was able to get a DnC. it was not genetic just a freak of nature.

Some women don't feel movement until 20-22 weeks- I was one of them. I was terrified that there was something wrong with my baby too (I had a miscarriage with my first).

There is the possibility that you have had what they call a "missed miscarriage" which basically means that the baby has stopped growing and your body hasn't processed it yet (again, something that happened to me)

At 18 weeks you should be close to an appointment with your OB, they will check for a heartbeat among other things, best of luck, but keep a positive attitude, it sounds like everything is OK!

Well I didn't start to feel movement until about 22 weeks. So that part of it is normal. It was about 18 weeks that I was like, "am I REALLY prego?! I don't feel like it." THen you have the thought, did the baby die and I don't know it?? I am now 37 weeks and could go into labor any day. I think it's normal to have these fears. But I'm sure everything is fine. If you are in doubt, I'd schedule an appt to have your doctor do the doppler to listen to hte Heartbeat. That will set your mind at ease.
Good luck and keep us posted

It is really normal not to feel anything at this point in your pregnancy. And if you have not had an unusual happenings, I really wouldn't worry. When is your next appointment?

You could call the doctor if you are honestly freaking out and ask if you can come in and have them check the heartbeat. But, at 18 weeks, it is so normal to have not felt movements yet that they probably will not be concerned.

It is possible to lose the baby and not know it, but it is very, very uncommon. The best thing you can do is take plenty of time to rest. You are probably not going to notice those tiny flutters when you are up and moving and you are probably not going to notice them when you are freaking out. Try to stay calm and get your mind in-tune with your body. It might take a few days or so for you to really start to connect with your body and baby, but soon, you will be able to feel kicks and flutters.

Best of luck!

It sometimes takes ppl a little longer to feel tha baby moving around, especially if this is your first pregnancy. It can easily be mistaken for something else. It is so weak at first, but will get stronger. You will feel it eventually and you will wonder if there ever was a time you couldn't feel it. :) I used to worry like you, too. I worried that something was wrong until I started to show and felt the baby kicking and moving. Once these happen you will instantly be relieved. At this far along there is only such a low chance that something could have happened so, don't even think about that! Everything is fine!

Your chance of a miscarriage after the first trimester is very low. The people you see talking about not having a heart beat are generally in the first trimester around the time that the heart beat is first established and able to detect by doppler. Yes you would eventually have a clue that your baby was no longer alive.

That being said, I rented a doppler to use at home around 14wks and will be sending it back soon now that I have movement every day. I got mine at bellybeats.com for $25/month. To me it was worth it. When I wasn't feeling movement or movement every day I would listen for the heart beat every morning, just long enough to know it was there and that was it.

I am 24wks now and feel him every day so have no need for it but it was worth every penny until recently.

That far along the baby would be known as stillborn. It's still pretty early to be worried about not feeling your little one though. I didn't really notice mine until 20-21 weeks either time. There were a couple "was that the baby?" momments but nothing consistent or for certain until later. Once you're noticing the baby moving regularly it it's very reassuring and worrying up until that point is normal and stressful. Even once they get going it can still be a few weeks before you find patterns and can get them to resond when you haven't felt them in a while.
Try to relax and congrats on your little one

I hate to tell you, but yes early on in the pregnancy, it is possible. I had that happen to me years ago. I was about 2-3 months along and the doctor suddenly became really concerned. My uterus wasn't expanding and he kept doing test after test. He finally determined that I had a "non-viable" pregnancy [med speak for the baby had died]. I had no symptoms that it had happened. Since I was due to go on vacation, he did a D&C because there was no way to time when I'd actually miscarry and he was afraid I'd hemorrhage to death on the road.

And by the way, the baby is too small yet for you to feel movement. You'll feel flutters by the 4th month and some kicks by the 5th. By the sixth, you'll know for sure.

Don't be concerned...I promise you that you have probably felt the baby move you just don't know you were feeling it. I am 21 weeks pregnant with my first child and I did not feel her first movements until the latter part of my 18th week and even then they were weak...just three short weeks later and she is a gymnast...spinning cartwheels and kicking the mess out of me!! Try to relax and know that your baby is just fine...find some quiet time in the evening and sit down and place your hands on your belly...if you are still long enough you will feel your baby...it feels more like a throbbing in your lower abdomen than the butterflies I have heard it referred too...soon enough you will start to recognize your baby's movements.

Congratulations on your little one!! It is so exciting and scary all at the same time!

I wouldnt worry, I just googled it and you can feel movement anywhere from 13 to 25 wks, mostly around 20. When is your next dr app? you'll hear the heartbeat and everything will be fine. Or if you cant wait that long call the dr and tell them your concerns, maybe they can get you in sooner. Good luck

Whoa, whoa, whoa...you're freaking. You're speaking of still born because yes, you're right after a certain amount of weeks it's no longer a miscarriage. You are only 18 weeks. A little early to be feeling tons of movement and "kicks". The baby is sooo tiny still. I suggest drinking a big glass of juice or water, lay down on your left side and wait to feel baby move. If you're still freaking out go a head and call your doc and tell him/her your concerns. Chances are everything fine.
