Clitellum is girdle where there are gland cells. These cells secrete a substance which dries up to form the cocoon in which the egg is discharged and sperms too so as to ensure fertilization. In the cocoon the embryo of earthworm develops.

The clitellum of an earth worm is used for sexual reproduction. The clitellum creates a sticky mucous membrane that helps the two worms bind together. At this point the worms will release sperm and slither apart from each other. As they release from each other the sperm and membrane sac from the clitellum will pick up eggs from the worms. The eggs will then be fertilized and remain in the membrane sac. This sac will then act like a protective cocoon for the fertilized eggs. As a side note earthworms are hermaphrodites so both will release sperm and eggs, although they will not self fertilize.
