Historically, black cats were symbolically associated with witchcraft and evil. In Hebrew and Babylonian folklore, cats are compared to serpents, coiled on a hearth. Black cats (and sometimes, other animals of the same colour, or even white cats) were sometimes suspected of being the familiars of witches.

For many years people have associated black cats with witchcraft, and since witchcraft is considered to be evil by the majority of the population it's kind of like saying evil has crossed your path. Since having evil cross your path has never really been considered pleasent, most people were lead to believe it was bad luck. Personally, I think it's bogus. I own an amazingly beautiful black cat and I've never had any bad luck to speak of.

I think its from a belief that witches transforms to a cat. And when a person came across or a cat crosses the person's path that witches will curse that person. Sorry, not much help.

I guess I'm doomed to an eternity of bad luck since I own one?
