Sorry to hear that insurance won't cover it, but congratulations on the pregnancy! Here are a few things that could help reduce the cost:
- Consider having your baby at a birthing center instead of at a hospital. It is significantly cheaper. This is not an option for everyone, but if you are having a low-risk pregnancy and are okay with a natural birth, it's alot cheaper.
If you decide to have the baby at a hospital, be sure to call around for prices. There's alot of components to that cost, but be sure to ask what is included in the quotes you're getting.
- Call around for prices on your monthly appointments and consider when you choose your obstetrician/birthing center.
- No matter who you go to, be a strong advocate for yourself. Ask questions about every extra appointment, blood test and ultrasound that your doctor recommends. Doctors often don't know how much a procedure costs, and won't weigh the cost to benefit ratio.
- In general, the less intervention there is in a birth, the less it will cost.

You may make too much to qualify for government aid, but Medicaid will NOT turn down pregnant women.
Apply again and give them a written note from your doctor confirming your pregnancy.
They will give you Medicaid as a "secondary" insurance - and you'll keep your current insurance as your first.
The Medicaid will pick up the charges that your first insurance won't pay for.
Trust me - this is true. I have just gone through the exact same thing.

im not sure why your insurance wont cover you it's thought your job right and with the government there diff programs but they can not turn u down. where do you stay cause i know in IL. there a lot of diff. programs cause to be honest there is no cheap way of going though this with mat. care there are no short cuts you have to go to all your app. u need i think at least 2 ultrasounds and your delivery it's self is a arm and a leg and you never know what will happen doing labor that will cause you to need extra care. i say research cause someone has to at least pay for half.

Look for a birth center. The cost is much less and the infant mortality rate is lower than a hospital. Another option is a homebirth with a midwife.

Most insurance does NOT cover maternity, which is just horrible! If you google maternity coverage/insurance your bound to find numerous places with low premiums. Good Luck!

I would keep looking into your insurance. usually pregnancy is required to be covered. or at least it is on my insurance.
but if it is the case that they won't, check out free clinics in the area that specialize in women and children.

i was told that medicaid will cover a pregnant woman no matter what. it will not hurt to try. but as long as it was not a preexisting pregnancy before you got your insurance, they should cover it

My wife and I had a similar issue - she was in school, I didn't have a job when she got pregnant.
We explained our situation to doctors - they didn't care.
We explained our situation to a mid-wife, she negotiated a flat fee price up front with us. We liked her so much we went back when we had our second child.
