My roomate's boyfriend spent the weekend here. I've never been particularly fond of him, but I kept my mouth shut to make my roomate happy. Yesterday, he decided to trick us into watching a video of people shoving a kitten into a cage, dousing it in gasoline, and lighting it on fire, burning it to death! He sat there laughing while we stared in horror. I was so disgusted I had to leave the room.

Also, he's told me on numerous occassions that he wishes emotions didn't exist because they just end up making people weak and unable to make important decisions and always tells us he doesn't really feel emotions and thinks that they hinder the human race. What's wrong with him? Should I encourage him to seek counselling?

I doubt there's anything you can do about him.

Trying to encourage him to seek counseling is most likely to cause problems.

Enjoying causing pain, and enjoying freaking the two of you out is not a good sign.

Nor is his rejection of all human feeling.

What did your rommie think of the cat thing?

I'm hoping she realizes that he's not right.

Sorry, I have no insti-diagnosis, but enjoying the pain of others, and having a girlfriend when claiming to have no feelings are not good.

I hope there's some way you can at least suggest that, after the cat thing, you really don't feel comfortable having him in your home any more. Just explain that the event so freaked you out that you'd be jumpy that he'd subject you to more horror if he came over again.

It's very likely that the emotions this "gentleman" experiences are so intensely morbid he must suppress them for the sake of his own sanity.

I doubt someone so self-righteous would ever heed advice to seek counseling.

And remember, emotions persist in us today as a survival mechanism from generations past.

You should urge your Friend to get away from this guy. Almost without fail if you look at the childhoods of serial killers and just pathologically abusive people, the abuse almost always starts with small animals. Most of the time it starts at early childhood but not always. Really you need to look into it.

Avoid a person like this - these are sociopath symptoms.
He was probably beaten as a child. Be careful not to be drawn into his agenda. Maybe would not accept counselling as he would see it as weak. The roommate needs to be careful.

He seems like he might have Antisocial Personality Disorder, which used to be called sociopathy. His lack of empathy is troubling. I would definitely encourage him to seek counseling and be careful around him as well.

most likely he's just an idiot who wants to act like something he's not... but he could be a psychopath or a sociopath.. though he could be a lot of things.

Not enough info to tell... but either way you won't get through to him.. just work on your friend and convincing her she can and should do better.

He's a sociatpath--avoid him at all costs! Watch your girlfriend's back if she breaks up with him (she really should) because people like him don't take rejection well.....
