Social stratification is where society is divided in a hierarchical terms (e.g. the class systems). It is where one group of people (based on characteristics such as age, gender, race, religion, class) automatically receive better opportunities or have better life chances than another group. For example, extreme feminism states that society is patriarchal (created so that men are Superior); Marx would say that class is the main factor in society for social devisions etc.
