Koalas only eat the leaves from young shoots of the Eucalyptus tree.

I suggest that you establish a Eucalyptus plantation first.

Fortunately they are fairly fast-growing trees, so it should only take 5 - 7 years.

In hot climates the oil vapour from the trees often ignites spontaneously, razing the forest to the ground.

Still want one? Ah, I thought not.

Koalas aren't bears as many people are led to believe. They aren't even related to bears. The koala is related to the kangaroo and the wombat. The koala is a mammal. The reason the koala is called a koala bear is because the koala looks like a teddy bear.

Now there are only 2,000 to 8,000 koalas in the wild! Although not officially classified as endangered, the population of Australian koalas has dropped by 90% in less than a decade!

Koalas do best in an environment that suits them best. they are not quite the right animal for a pet. they can be agressive and make lots of waste. they have a very special diet that a pet owner would have an extraordinarily hard time accomodating. Koalas grow very large and need lots of space and like to be in trees. i don't recommend them as pets, although they are quite cute.

You can NOT own a Koala as a pet. Koalas are a protected species, and even most zoos can't keep them properly. Try just getting a good stuffed Koala and then 'adopt' a real Koala through the World Wildlife Fund ... they'll give you a certificate and send you a stuffed animal (your choice of several) for this 'donation' to the health and maintenance of ALL wild animals.

To mel - Koalas are not bears. I don't even know why they are called bears. I should know because I recently did a project on koalas. In fact, they are more related to Bears and Tazmanian Devils than they are to bears. They are in a group called 'Marsupials'. (Mar-SOOH-pee-ahls)

To the question asker - I think it would be illegal to own a koala bear. I think koalas can be aggresive because they have really sharp claws, strong legs, and sharp teeth. Koalas are a protected species, and unless you live in Australia, I doubt you will see one. And also, Koalas only eat Eucalytus Leaves...

You can't legally own a Koala bear, the belong in the wild.
Or in a zoo where there's many people who are specially trained to take care of them.

Maybe you can volunteer at a zoo instead.

Wild animals really shouldn't be kept as pets, even ones that have been raised out of the wild their whole life can be very dangerous. I mean imagine if someone made you stay in a house 24/7 for the rest of your life, you could leave for any reason. Thats what its like keeping wild animals in an house instead of out in the wild where they belong. Often wild animals that are kept as house pets because mean or really depressed. i would just really think about it before you make any decisions.

In California(or anywhere else!), you CANNOT legally own a koala as a pet...
