Separating Less usefull Long Chain Hydrocarbons which are in low demand into Small Chain hydrocarbons Which are in high demand.

Without this process there would almost certainly be a shortage of Petrol, kerosene ( jet fuel ) or Diesel.

to take usless long chain hydrocarbons to more usful ones (i.e decane, hexane etc) to make petroleum and other hydrocarbon fuels (diesel, kerosene).
they are also used to make polymer whioch are very useful as they are strong, mouldable and very resistant to degrading. (eg polyethene- plastic bags)

oils and polymers, the oils are made more efficient and easier to burn (more refined if you will) as they are already broken down to a degree.
