Very good question. One that points right to the heart of the matter. We will only change the direction of this country when we finally get past this obsession with party affiliation and hone in on the candidate. I know too many people who can't see beyond the party. That is how we got Bush in office in the first place. What you have done is created a check list for yourself and now you can begin to see which candidate comes the closes to agreeing with your beliefs. If we all approached it this way we could pin these candidates down and make them accountable. Pat Robertson is prime example of my argument. He endorsed Gulliani who basically is a contradiction to everything Robertson has stood against. Why? Because Giuliani stands a better chance of beating the Democratic nomination. Enough said. Hang in there.

EVERYBODY is for better healthcare.
EVERYBODY is for better education.
EVERYBODY is for lower gas prices (except the oil companies)

We're all agreed on this. Where it gets tricky is how do we pay for the better healthcare or education - if you want lower taxes, then you want to pay for these things privately - if you want better governmental coordination, then you'll realize that you need to fund them.

If you are for gay marriage but against abortion, then you're socially a moderate.

Getting out Iraq? Its not clear to me if that that really places you one way or the other. If you were for staying in Iraq as part of a glorious victory etc etc, then you are conservative.

You are a socially moderate conservative - probably a Republican.

But I'd imagine your pretty disillusioned.

As a liberal I would say to you: Don't be discouraged. You are reasonable. I don't agree with you about the government and taxes, etc, but you are being reasonable and YOU are the heart and soul of the Republican party.

That depends on how you want to accomplish better healthcare and education. Republicans want to let the free market improve healthcare, and want to improve education by running it better. Democrats want to make healthcare more government controlled and want to spend more on education. Republicans want lower taxes. All people want lower gas prices. Republicans are against abortion. Democrats are for gay marriage. Members of both parties would like to get out of Iraq. You can always register as an independent and vote your conscience.

That's mostly where I stand, and I've found the Democratic party to represent the most of my interests. The GOP claims to lower taxes, but not mine, and I honestly think the abortion question shouldn't be settled by politicians- it's a question of medical ethics and that should probably be decided by doctors.

How you vote probably depends a lot on how you prioritize those things. A friend suggested a site last night to me, that you might find useful: http://www.selectsmart.com/president/2008.html

Better health care is a cop-out. Who doesn't want better health care? Same with getting out of Iraq. Everyone wants that. Everyone also wants lower gas prices, except maybe the federal government. Everyone also wants better education.

So, of the seven "issues" you have listed, only three are relevant, and two out of those three are republican ideals.

You're a conservative liberal because you're in a moral delimna regarding marriage. The Republican party is the God Party.
