Rabbits aren't quite exactly like dogs or cats. Rabbits usually remember anything that has hurt them and get meaner because of it. A dog or cat if disciplined on the other hand might cower or retreat afterwards but a rabbit will only act more agressive. So never discipline your rabbit. The rabbit also could possibly take the surgery as an act of agression towards it. Other things also affect a rabbit such as hormones. And if you have the pen too large or let your rabbit run loose too much that can allow some rabbits to turn mean. I kind of equate having too big of a pen or letting the rabbit out then putting it back in a pen similar to letting a somewhat tame wild animal run free for a good while then trying cage it back up. It might be nice when you cage the animal back up again, but then again depending on the animal it may turn all agressive afterwards.

I've grown up around rabbits ever since I was 5 years old and have gotten to know their behavior patterns very well. I've been raising them now for over 25 years. If you are around rabbits a lot like I have been, you can watch their body language and tell a lot about how they feel.

Here are a few suggestions:

1. Make sure you have a cage for your rabbit that isn't too small or too big. Pick one where you can reach to the back corners of the cage OK so the rabbit doesn't feel like it can escape back into a corner where you can reach it and defend itself.

2. Don't let the rabbit out to run then pen it back up. Some rabbits can take that and still be nice and others can't. Rabbits have different personalities just like people do. If you ever do let it out to run, the rabbit needs to be closely monitored in an area where it can't get away from you or hide.

3. Never discipline the rabbit by spanking. It only makes them meaner. Instead pet their head right between the eyes when they are all mean. It calms them down. The more you work with your rabbit the nicer it will become.

4. Be careful getting your rabbit out of the cage if it is mean. Use one hand to distract it while you use the other to grab it up so that you don't get bitten.

5. Don't try training the rabbit to be nice inside its cage. The cage is their territory and not yours. You need to get the rabbit on neutral territory or your territory. That means pulling it out of the cage and setting it on a table with a carpet pad on it and petting it on the carpet pad. You'll be surprised by how much less agressive the rabbit is when it is setting on the carpet pad outside of the cage and you are petting it.

6. Be really really patient. Training a mean rabbit to be nice takes a lot of time and patience.

7. Never pet a rabbit from the back. Always pet from the front so the rabbit can see your hand coming towards it. Feeling a sudden touch on its back will usually scare it and that's not good. You want it to build up its trust in you and it can't if it is getting scared by feeling a touch coming out of nowhere.

A personal thought:

I know having an animal fixed can somewhat change the animals personality due to the lack of hormones. But I think most animals have personalities just like people do. Many women have their reproductive organs removed and sometimes men have to also. If you pay attention to people, their base personality doesn't really change after that. It's my thinking that having a rabbit fixed may change the hormones and possibly affect the personality, but the base personality of the animal doesn't change just like in humans. I think that is why some rabbits don't become nicer after they have been fixed or still don't get along after they are fixed. Fixing an animal cannot change that base personality. It can only change and affect the hormones which influence the personality but don't set or state the personality.

For example a woman going through her period may act a little differently during that time period, but that is still the same person and same personality. It's just that the personality is somewhat influenced by the level of hormones.
