Why not cut it to 30% and pay of the debt with the other 30%?

Because old people would die without the social security and medicare programs they've been paying into their whole lives.

Their are many exceptable ideas that have been offered,but this Congress is unwilling to do anything with them.
You people who rant and rave to the point of insanity about how much we spend on themilitary andthe war. THAT is a drop in the bucket compared to what's going on with Social Security. The "lock box" you may have heard about is a pure unadulterated "Barbara Steisand". When it comes time to pay the tab,the Government won't have the money for all those I.O.U's [which by the way are figured into the National Debt] will BANKRUPT the United States!! That is a Fact!!!!!

By definition these entitlements are actual obligations.

Would you want our leaders to renounce our collective debts?

By the way, 60% seems a bit high.

edit: 60% doesn't seem wildly high. Just a little bit. So I guess I was splitting hairs. Sorry.

60%? your smoking something is no more than 3 %. Unless you are talking about military industrial complex entitlements.

Your numbers are off. That's 60% (if that) of NON- MILITARY spending. The debt is primarily military.

We cap social welfare at 18 million, but spend 92 billion on corporate welfare. So, yes let's cut down on entitlements for big business.

Because too many people depend on those of us who carry the load to support them. They lack the ability to work, because they were never forced to learn how.
They use the power of the vote to remain leaches on society.
