Because you can't see what's in/under them, and children are generally afraid of the night and its unknown depths. I'm sure the same would apply for a dark forest or alleyway, among other things.

those are places where person can hide, and you'll never notice if you wont look. In my room there were a little of space behind my door when the door is open, every time goign in my room, I used to look behind the door, to make sure nobody is there hiding.
And I dont think because its dark, I think movies make an influence here.. where else all bad creatures or people are coming from? From closet! Where do you hide? In closet!

THE UNKNOWN IS ALWAYS SCARY. FOR EXAMPLE, IF 300 FIVE YEAR OLDS WERE TOLD TO DRAW AN ALIEN, THEY WOULD ALL HAVE EYES, NOSES, AND MOUTHS. MY POINT IS THEY WOULD INCLUDE HUMAN ELEMENTS BECAUSE NONE OF THEM HAVE SEEN AN ALIEN. THE CLOSET AND UNDERNEATH THE BED ARE UNKNOWNS--THEY CAN'T BE SEEN THEREFOR THEY ARE SCARY AND UNDEFINABLE. WORD?

i've never heard of a closet under a bed before and it sounds kinda spooky to me. I'm not very fond of closets, i can't sleep if my closet is open, i feel like somebody's watching me
