Christopher Columbus Controversey?

For a history class, we have to write a report on Christopher Columbus 9weither he is an american hero or is he a mass murderer). I think that he is an American hero. What would be a good thesis for this topic?

I just want one for a hero though

It is clear that many Native Americans had died while Colombus was in the “new world”,but the blame shouldn’t be all on Christopher Columbus.

You could emphasize the creative and ingenious vision he may have had cause most people thought the world was flat so he must've had some great ideas in his head to think that the world is round and he could sail the other direction to get to the East. He must've been a great sailor and navigator to to cross the Atlantic cause back then most ships stayed close to or in sight of land.
Aside from those qualities, he's not really an American hero though. He wasn't even American, or Protestant Anglo-Saxon (which is what almost all of our Founders were) and America didn't exist until centuries after him. Good luck defending your views though!

How do you figure American Hero. If anything he is a Spanish Hero not an American Hero. America did not even exist as we know it until he discovered it looking for a short cut to India.
More important, according to the religious feelings at the time, It brought untold riches in gold and gems to Most Holy Catholic Spain denying the heretic pagan English protestants from getting their hands on the gold and gems of South and Cental America.

You can make arguments for both sides. The correct answer and viewpoint for your report would be both as it is correct. He was a controversial thinker, but also a thief and murderer.
