Declination. (Sorry, I misread it the first time.)

Earth's latitudes are determined by the declination that passes at the zenith.

Declinations (distances from the celestial equator, measured northward or southward) were established first, then projected down on Earth's surface to establish latitudes.

This was much easier than actually going out and measure Earth (which only happened after the 16th century)

It is called declination. It is measured in degrees.Positive towards north and negative towards south.
