Only you can answer this because it may depend on your work environment. Is it ok if you miss it? I mean, maybe your work people say it's ok if you miss it but really, that's not true.
If it's not a big deal if you miss the work party then go to the church party because that's what you want to do. That's what I gather from your question here. Merry Christmas!

It is always wise to be honest. Tell the work party organizing committee that you had this other party to attend and wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a fun time before work is over. Let them know that you would love to be there, so maybe next year the dates will be different and you will attend. However, if you may make needed work related contacts at the party and are getting the vibe that you must attend or cause problems for yourself at work, you will have to reverse this suggestion and let the people at church know you have to attend this other party..and wish them all a very merry Christmas, instead. Christians are much more forgiving!

Attend the church party. Although I am sure you have friends at work you see them everyday where as the people from church not as often. If you are trying to build a community of people around you in the church you need to be attending these functions. Another reason is your faith should be first. The people at work won't think anything less of you and it won't affect your relationships. This is a faith based holiday soooo......I am leaning towards the Church. Your office will have other social events thoughout the year but the church this is probably their biggest event.

I think it's that everyday becomes the Christmas Party at "The Office". And, of course, my office is preparing to watch the Beni-Hana episode over the lunch hour. I'll be up here hangin' with y'all.

Notify the office party that you want to attend the church party.
What are they going to do, FIRE you for not attending the office party?

It would be in much better to attend your office party as that way your boss can't hold it over your head.

You'll have a lot more fun at the office Christmas party, people will let themselves go more.
Church Christmas parties are full of boring, holier-than-thou snobs and old people queuing up for Heaven. Go to the office one and live!

Go to the one that you prefer (church) - community building is so important these days - and people do not do enough of it. your office people will be there - dont worry about it - you see them everyday
