I'm looking to setup a wireless network in a 4,200 square foot home. I do not want a weak signal in any of the rooms, and I do not want it to be slow. I have a 6meg dsl connection that will be in the house. There is about 6 bedrooms that are my main concern, as well as an upstairs loft. Everything else is downstairs. I'd like the wireless to work virually anywhere in the house and on the patio. Can someone tell me what I need to buy/look at? Thank you

If you have the money to spend, I would recommend buying one Cisco 1242 for each floor. These access points have very strong radios, and should provide wireless throughout. The problem you would probably have would be the network cable runs from your router, to the center area of each floor for an access point. Also, the Cisco AP's are not the easiest to set up, you would probably want to hire someone to do it for you.

Another alternitive would be to buy one of those wirless N access points, and buy wireless N radios for each machine that you are wanting to connect. I do not recomend wireless N, sense it has not been ratified yet. But most of the ones on the market have a very long range, and more than enough band to support your 6M connection.

My house somewhat larger than that. What I have is the wrt54GS on the main floor with high gain antennas. I have no issues upstairs and at the neighbors house. In the terrace level I did use another high gain antennae on the PC there as it is in a corner at the far end and near a lot of duct work. If you have any doubt, buy all wireless N hardware both router and NICs or set up an access point per floor. Overkill in my opinion but if you want to be sure that you have max connection rate and will be streaming media that may be the better way.

Wireless N is your best friend. If you want to eliminate having multiple access points and addressing schematics that would cause confusion when it comes to sharing files on the network then check out some of Linksys' Draft N routers. They will break you pocket at 100+ a pop, but the range is insane, read up more under their product descriptions.

No honestly no longer. Our position of abode is that enormous (above a 2 automobile storage) and this is laid out with a wide-spread-cost room (kitchen and the residing room self-discipline) on one area and 2 bedrooms on the alternative with a bath interior the middle. there's a bar dividing the residing room and kitchen making a collection of tables and chairs previous-shaped (no longer that they could fit anyplace). The rooms are also alluring small and closets just about nonexistent. We happen to be minimalists and simplest have some products of furnishings so all of it works. also this lay out appears to be like the most efficient use of area. The laundry is contained in the storage too. the finished characteristic of this position of abode is the position and the large deck surrounding it. The deck makes it evaluate better and we've a patio table for dinner with visitors.

Definitely a wireless router, you might want to place it around the middle of the house, and because you have a pretty big house, you'll probably also need an access point, maybe a couple, they extend the range of your router though. A good choice would be one that's Wireless-G at 108MBPS
