Me and my friends are building a box rail for snowboarding box out of wood but I was wondering what type of material would be best to put on top of the wood. I was thinking plexi glass but im not sure if that may be to slippery. any suggestions?

The best material for this is a kind of plastic called HDPE (High density polyethylene). It is usually a flexible, white plastic like that used in milk cartons. When thick enough, it is quite strong and flexible enough to withstand a lot of abuse.

You are correct, plexiglass is too slick but it is also too hard and brittle. A snowboard edge would crack and destroy this stuff. Also, since HDPE is much softer, your edge will bite into it a little which will give you some amount of control.

The best way to do it is to buy a really thick strip (at least 1/2") and then counter sink flat head screws into it to attach it to the box. This will allow for a lot of wear before the screw heads are exposed. You may also be able to use some kind of adhesive, but the cold and the plastic may limit the kinds of adhesives that would work.

Good Luck.

Another material I always wanted to try was Trex...it's a recycles plastic material that they use to make decks and patios with. It has similar properties to HDPE (as it's largely made from recycled HDPE) and they ussually come preformed in thick planks and 2x4 shapes. Might be good to make a rail with.

Use formica. It is used for counter tops and things like that. It is really hard and smooth, you will beable to slide it easily without catching an edge. If you go to a lumberyard or homedepot, you can probably get some scraps for free.
