Many do so for economic reasons - some think that the US is paradise where people can get rich easily.

Many people try to get from Haiti to the US, too.

Also Mexicans crossing the border illegally.

With Cubans, though, there is the Cuban Adjustment Act which means that if they get to the US and stay a year, even if they entered illegally, they can apply for residency in the US.

You are asking the wrong question. The right question is: Why in all of Cuba's history, before Castro, people flocked to Cuba and the problem was trying to control people from getting in?

Several reasons...

Communists live well and the general population struggle like you wouldnt believe.

Castro personally owns everything and Cubans own little. Stores are large but the whole inventory they have is in the first 6 feet by the windows. Restaurants have 20 page menus and they have a choice of two things you can order and these are the stores that accept foreign currency ONLY. Stores that accept Pesos have much less.

Communists rule with an iron fist keeping the population scared of being swept up and taken to jail for just about anything or nothing. If you disagree publicly you get beat and taken to jail and jail is worse than you could possibly believe.

If you are seen talking with a NON Cuban you can be arrested and put in a re-education camp. Prostitutes were promoted by Castro for Hard Currency. Lawyers and Doctors became prostitutes at night to make ends meet. Castro changed his mind and if you were caught being a prostitute you went to 8 month re-education camp.

If you aquired more than 2.5 lbs of Rice a month you were subject to being arrested and put in jail.

Communist keep the people in line with an Iron Fist, Secret Police and your neighbors dropping a dime on you for a few pounds of extra rice.

Horrible place to live and not free at all. It is worse than I am starting to describe!

Greener pastures... Most countries right on the U.S.' door step have similar situations.

Mexico, Haiti, Dom. Rep. etc... All have illegal immigration into the United States as does several countries in Central America as well...
