I agree with Looney! The reason it has never worked, is that people haven't evolved to the point yet, that the majority values cooperation over competition. I personally feel that cooperation is vastly superior to competition. The idea that many have, that we are all separate from each other...when in truth we are all one, is a harmful one which holds us back from evolving. Also the idea that there is not enough to go around, encourages hoarding, and that causes some to have way more than anyone could ever really need, and others with nothing, or next to nothing. There is far more wrong with our system the way it is now, then there ever could be with socialism in its purest and most democratic form. *sm*

If you think the government can do a better job making decisions than you can-then nothing is wrong with it!!!!
Do you really want your future in the hands of corrupt politians?
Do you really want the government dipping into your pockets to pay someone else's bills?
I make my money, I should get to decide how it's going to be invested and spent.
Look at the Soviet Union. (high unemployment and food shortages) Socialism doesn't motivate people. When the ideology of the system is to make every have equal income, it only rewards those who don't make anything and punishes those who work. And those in government are exempt from those rules. Any system the government won't put it's employees in, is not good for us either. (THINK SOCIAL SECURITY-POLITICIANS HAVE THEIR OWN RETIREMENT PLAN, and they earn interest, but they don't want us to be have privatized social security?)
Think for yourself instead of listening to the media, and you'll find everything is wrong with it. If you want everyone to be equal, lets start with us having the same opportunities to increase our retirement benefits as politicians.

It removes the incentive to work hard to get ahead and influences a lot of people to just skate by and live on the goverment dole.

It does not encourage competition - the individual develops the mentality, "why should i work harder, if I receive the same as the next guy?" Certain social programs are necessary, but full on socialism can and will never succeed.

The biggest thing I see wrong with it is that it rewards people for doing nothing by taking the earnings of those who have done something.
It really is legalized theft, as it takes from the one who earns, and gives it to the one who does not.

In nations that have "tried" to be fully socialistic it has led to a collapse of their economy and eventually the nation with it.

In nations that balance it out with a healthy dose of capitalism.. it seems to work just fine.

Take a look at what it did to the USSR and you will find your answer. This country was built on capitalism and individual effort. Why do we want to end that now?
