Did anyone take lactaction classes before giving birth? My hospital said that they give one on one sessions while I am in the hospital after giving birth but I would kind of like to geta ump on it just to be educated. I am going to ask my doctor what she thinks on Thursday but just wanted to get your opinions. I have heard that breastfeeding can be challenging in the beginning so I am trying my best to be well-informed and prepared. There are so many advantages to breastfeeding. Any input is appreciated!

Personally...my lactation consultant at the hospital after the birth of my son was USELESS...

I got ALL My information from a wonderful website called http://www.kellymom.com and also from a group right here on yahoo called Milk_drunk

I HIGHLY recommend that you visit both...the website has everything you ever wanted to know about breastfeeding...

And the group is a gathering of women from all over the world that can offer you tips on real world experience...

Ive been nursing my son for 13 months now...and I would have never made it this far had it not been for the information at the website and the information and moral support of the group...

Check it out.

Best of luck and congratulations!

If you plan on breastfeeding I really suggest taking a breastfeeding class. I also suggest making your husband/significant other go as well. You are going to need a lot of support in the first month, because it does get very frustrating. I wanted to give up so many times, but my husband was there for me. In the first month, the baby will want to nurse a lot, and you just need to let him/her. You may think you are not producing enough milk, but as long as your child is gaining weight you have enough milk. Don't listen to people who say you should give your baby formula. I can't even count how many people tell me that. I did a ton of research online about breastfeeding, and let me tell you, it helped tremendously. The more informed you are, the better off you will be. I believe many women stop breastfeeding because they were not well informed. For more information you can also contact your local La Leche League. Breastfeeding is really a great experience, and I am so glad I stuck with it. I hope everything works out for you and your new baby.

I teach breastfeeding classes at metropolitan hospital. It is very difficult to tell what women need to know in 2 hours. I would recommend that you ask new mothers that you know if they took a class, where, and were they satisfied with the information they received. If you don't find one, then at least read "Breastfeeding Made Simple." It's the best book out there on breastfeeding because it explains the 7 natural laws of breastfeeding very clearly and it has the best description of the asymmetric latch. Some of the other books are still offering old information on latching.

I took a class a couple weeks ago. I'm 36 weeks along now. It was soooo informative. I think every pregnant woman should take the class. The one I took was 2.5 hours long. Before the class, I thought, 'This is going to be boring. What could they possibly talk about for 2 and a half hours?' But it was so full of information. You should definitley attend one. You will feel much more comfortable being armed with information. You will learn that breast feeding is going to be difficult in the beginning, but not to give up. And they will teach you why it's difficult so you will understand and get past it. I haven't even had the baby yet, but the class got me all psyched up to do all I can to breast feed successfully :)

I definitely recommend the class. Even though they do offer the one on one session at the hospital, you really will get a lot out more info from the class. I felt much more confident about breastfeeding after taking the class.

I recommend all pregnant women who plan to breast feed take the classes. There can be a lot of challenges at first, and this will help a lot!
Sure, the hospital has one on one sessions, but when? Two days after you give birth?
The postpartum nurses are usually great, but the lactation consultants typically have limited hours [ like 9 to 5, mon thru fri - or less ].

I didn't take classes before the baby but I took the class in the hospital and it was helpful. I can't see the harm in taking classes before your baby comes but I think it's better to take them after you have tried it with your baby. Every baby is different so everyone's breast feeding experience is different. If you take classes after your baby is born, then you can ask questions specifically related to you and your child as well as figure out which technique works best for your baby. If I were you, I would wait on the classes and just read up as much as you can about it

Consider joining ABA (Australia Breastfeeding Association) & attending meetings. (Note: you dont have to be a member to attend meetings, but funds will help ANA continue all their great work) You will learn heaps. Best thing I ever did.
