My son has an acoustic as well as an electric guitar, the latter is a Strat style, by Fender. He wants a third guitar, another electric, because he keeps the electric that he's got at school and it's too much wear and tear to take it home every night.

One person suggested a Les Paul type guitar, but a real one is too expensive. I'm looking at an Ibanez GAX-70, used. Also wondered if a semi-hollow would be a good complement to what could now be considered a "collection" of guitars. There's an Epiphone "Dot" that's not too expensive, even for new. Any opinions?

Epiphone Dots are great for the money and would provide a little variety against the Strat.

Leo fender was the first guy to hook up a guitar to some electrical parts and get a sound from it. You really can't go wrong with a Fender, american or mexican made. My dad has been playing guitar for 38 years, and he always relishes playing his 3 year old mexican made stratocaster even with his 12 year old hammer and 10 year old gibson SG laying around. Stratocasters have that 5 set tone switch too, which is really nice for offsetting the pickups whereas an SG has humbuckers and can't be put out of phase without installing extra hardware. If you want a really good utilitarian guitar, get a fender. Stratocaster for heavier music and Telecaster if you want a cleaner plucky sound.

If you want a Gibson Les Paul, but think it's too expensive, buy an Epiphone Les Paul. It is cheaper, and Epiphones are made by Gibson.

Try Carvin if you could afford it.The Ibanez can take a good beating. The guitar all depends on his style.whats important is the pickup combinations and the amount of action he can get on the fretboard
