'Hard' or 'pure' sciences which involve direct observation and experimentation - physics, chemistry, biology, etc.
'Applied' sciences which apply existing knowledge to practical use - engineering, metallurgy, etc.
'Social' or 'soft' sciences which primarily involve interactions with people - psychology, anthropology, sociology, etc.
Then there's fake or pseudo science - such as political science, creation science, and Christian Science.
