It sounds awful - not really a name for a human being. Maybe a good name for a robot or a creature from another planet.

While I could somewhat understand the appeal if Sylar happens to be a family surname or something, it tends to come across as exactly the sort of choice that will immediately seem trendy, poorly-thought-out and/or quickly dated.
At best, people will all-too-often assume it a typo of popular trendy crossover Skylar. After all, the little tots are everywhere, and it's quite easy to mentally mistake the two.
Even worse, most who DO realize this says "Sylar" will obviously and immediately associate it with the pop-culture phenomenon Heroes. Therefore, it will generally come across as trendy and thoughtless (naming a child after a familiar television icon), meaningless (the name is simply taken from a watch brand on the show LOL), negative (he is technically a villain, after all) and fast dated.

I have always loved the name, and the short form Cy for a boy. Before heroes tho I always imagined it spelled Cyler, like Tyler with a C. If I have a son I plan on naming him that, I have no plans of children in sight and I assume by the time he hits school heroes will have blown over.

Sylar is nice - but if you change your mind the previous answer suggested Leyton - now that is a really nice name.

JOHNY CASH SANG --a boy named sue---what do you do? You pick him a name (any name) that will not get him picked on at school or cause him trouble in later life.If SYLAR fills the bill .then go for it.

I think it sounds like the villain in a sci fi novel, sorry.
Why not Silas, Sailor or even Schuyler/Skyler? They're not overly popular, but they're more familiar and don't have that "huh? whuh?" factor that I think you'll get with Sylar.
