Having read all the answers, which I appreciate, I see that the most-often-cited quality falls under the heading of honesty, integrity, and moral courage, with intelligence a close second. Therefore, I will choose one well-stated answer from those that address this issue.
Sorry if you found this frustrating. I was looking for the most important quality.

I believe it would be nice to see a president who doesn't receive any form of royalties from any oil company. Someone who has actually worked a blue-collar job in their life, who had to figure out just how they were going to pay their bills on a single paycheck.
Someone who is going to focus on fixing the problems of America before attempting to fix everyone else. As we send billions of dollars overseas, our own country is falling apart.
Someone who will uphold the Constitution of The United States of America, not spit on it and do whatever they wish.
Someone who will not allow religion, or religion-based beliefs be forced upon the citizens of this country. Everyone has a right to believe what they want. Too bad the politicians won't stand up for that, fearing the loss of religious voters.
The next President needs to confront Big Industry, corrupt officials, corrupt "non-profit" organizers who use the tax exempt status to raise personal wealth. Heavier taxes on all these record oil profits (meaning they don't HAVE to charge as much for gasoline, they are doing it for more profit) may bring them into line, but if the president comes from an oil family, or receives royalties/dividends, it wont happen.
We need an actual American in the Presidential Office. Not a Politician.

As a nation we need to be able to trust our president. That trust has been missing for some time. Trusting the president does not mean that the president always has to do what the president originally siad would be done. Trusting the president does mean that if the president does thins that are contrary to what the president said would be done that the president tells the american people what he has done and why. Yes, there are many things that for the sake of national security can not be told to the general public. But those things that can be told to the american people should be admitted to by the president.

Honesty
That is to say I want a president that does what he says and says we he does. It is far more important to me that the president does who he/she says than if the president says that he/she supports the isssue that I ,or the people in general, support.

I firmly believe that American people as a whole would support a president to do this more than they would support a president, or anyone that holds a public office, more if they could believe what that person says is what that person does than if that person says they will do, or are doing, what they have said than if the said or keep saying they will do what they believe people want them to do.

I would like for the next U.S. President to give a damn about the people. Instead of what funding we will invest in the troops across the world in a place where we are no longer wanted. I want a president who will bring our troops home and fix our country.

I want the next president to bring Americans and our allies back together. In short I want to be proud of my country again.
Bush damaged things greatly and even though I'm a Democrat, I feel like Hillary Clinton would be just as polarizing.

I would like the next US President to have, more concern on what's going on in the US instead of the middle east. Such as crime, jobs, and Hunger for the children. Yes the middle East problems are important, but the US should always be the Presidents priority. Crime is a big, let's start killing the people on death row. A come down hard on people who commit violent crimes.

It is very easy to criticize a public figure when you aren't the one having every statement you ever make recorded, then edited into convenient sound bytes to make you sound either stupid or smart, depending on the agenda of the often anonymous editor. I follow these threads from time to time hoping in vain to see some intellectual discussion. More often than not all I see is sweeping name calling from people substantially less educated than the folks they see fit to call stupid. But to all of you who give real answers to these questions, I salute you. Being myself a veteran, I'd always like a president who has personally experienced war. That kind tends not to rush off to war on a whim, nor cower from the prospect when it is needed.

I want the next president to be able to unify the country. During the end of and after a war is a very important time for a country to unite to repair the damages done by a weak leader and his damaging war. We need someone who is not going to play the politics of partisan-ism. We need someone who will work with everyone so that we can solve all of the problems that our country is dealing with. We need him/her to fix this war, deal with the economy, healthcare, inflation, homeland security, social security, education, and our budget in regards to the huge deficit. We need a strong leader with nothing but the best interests of the people in his/her mind.
