I live in an area that is experiencing a drought right now. My electric well pump is making more noise now than it used to. I think I might have to replace the pump and motor sooner or later. Is that a job I can do on my own?

More details: I think the pump is about 12 years old. It's a Sta-Rite brand pump... one horsepower pump (Model MSE 6)
The pump sits upright, right on the wellhead and the only pipe I can see above ground is a PVC pipe of about 2 1/4" outside diameter.

Can I tackle this on my own, or do I need to call a well guy?

Thanks in advance.

Call the well guy!!!! Yes it's possible to do it yourself but you need to know what you are doing and be prepared to repair anything on the spot. Your biggest task will be removing the pump and all the piping to the bottom of your well. A WORD OF CAUTION, IF YOU DROP ANY PART OF THE OPERATION, YOU LOSE, AND YOU WILL HAVE TO DRILL A NEW WELL........ recovery of the

NO, on second thought CALL THE WELL GUY, you're better off and the cost will be somewhere in the neighborhood of six to seven hundred dollars for everything.

Its not fun but it can be done if you know what your doing or have access to someone who does know.

Yours is an above ground type, if you could find another above ground type you could replace it. It wouldn't be hard at all if you could do a replacement in kind.

However you may have to go for an inground pump as I don't even know if you can get the above ground type anymore.

We replaced my grandmothers above ground type with an inground and it wasn't too hard, just a hassle with removing and replacing all the pipe.

We also had to fix my aunts as well. Hers was about 200' deeper than my grandmothers and was an inground type. The motor burned up and had to be replaced. Again the biggest bear was pulling the pipe and pump out of the ground, then keeping it all under control when putting it back in!

Sure you can do it yourself. And guarantee it yourself too if something goes wrong.

unless you have access to a hoist, call a well guy.
