I saw a very nice ceramic pot with lid for baked beans and I would love to buy it, but am afraid of lead. On the bottom, it says made in Taiwan. How can I tell if it is safe?

Better safe than sorry--don't buy it. Sorry but it probably is for decorative purposes. These day we are aware of the dangers for years we were not and no telling how many of us have been contaminated unduly.

If the pot has been kiln fired and has been glazed in all parts especially where food or water will reside it should then be safe. All materials that I know of that are produced into pottery or ceramics contain lead. the glazing is what makes it safe for things that will be consumed. you can bet if it was made in Taiwan it will be made of the cheapest most material and you can bet that will have lead in it.

You can purchase a lead test kit at Lowes or about any hardware store, just take the stick and rub it on, if it turns red it has lead in it.

i do not know if it would be worth the time/effort but you could have it check by a lead detector!!!
