A square sheet of metal has an area of 196 square inches. What is the length of each side?

The length of a swimming pool is to be three times the width. If the depth is to be a constant 4 feet and the volume is to be 4800 cubic feet, find the lenth and width.

A = x² = 196
x = 14

V = LWH
4800 = (3W)(W)(4)
1200 = 3W²
400 = W²
W = 20, L = 60

a square has equal sides therefore each side is the square root of 196 or 14 inches

volume = length times width times depth length=3width
depth 4 feet
3w x w x 4 = 4800
12w^2=4800
w^2=400
w=20 l=3w=60 20x60x4=4800

1) A square has equal sides of length s, and it's area is represented by s^2, so:

s^2 = 196

Take the square root of each side to get:

s = 16 inches.

2) The volume of a cube is width x length x depth:

Let's let w = the width. We know the length is 3 times the width, so length is 3*w, or 3w.

The volume would be: w * 3w * 4

So... w(3w)(4) = 4800
12w^2 = 4800
w^2 = 400
w = 20 feet

Length is 3w, so length is 60 feet

Best of luck! :)

1. let the length bel;
l^2=196 in^2, l=14 in.
2. let the width be x ft, the length is 3x, depth=4ft
volume=x*3x*4=4800
12x^2=4800
x^2=400
x=20ft
width =20ft, length=60ft. ANS.

sqrt 196=14

V=l*w*d
l=3w
d=4
4800/4=1200
1200/3=400
sq rt 400=20=w
l=3w=60

first one:
x*x=196in or
x^2=196in

second one:
l- length
w- width
d=4ft

3*w =l

V=4800ft^3 =l*w*d

4800ft^3 = 4ft*l*(l/3)
see if you can do it now.
