I was born in Miami Fl., lived there 6 months, raised for 9 years in Niagara Falls NY (moms hometown) and then moved to Charlotte NC (dads hometown). The irony is that I couldn't have been born any further south in the states if it was possible.
I will never forget how cruel some kids in school were because I had a "yankee" accent and I was Catholic, it doesn't matter now, since I am older, but it never stopped when I was living in the south. I learned to laugh about it, you have too. I feel like some people are still "fighting the civil war" with their ignorance and intolerance. 5years ago, my husband got a job offer of a lifetime in NJ, so I was more than happy to move. I don't understand it.....when we visited our parents in NC with our NJ liscense plate on our car recently,we got our car keyed and a nasty note about "Yankee go home." I don't get it,why? My husband is a true southern gentlemen, thank God, since MS has caused me so much pain and disabilities. For that I'm lucky!

We (actually my husband) drove the 680 miles vs time waiting in the airport. Way too uncomfortable due to my MS. I'd rather fly than go through this crap again with some a-hole keying our car.

Well actually that is true, but a lot of Northerners don't like the Yankee team either. I am a northerner and I don't like the Yankees. One of my least favorite teams.
Go Red Sox and braves and indians and for some reason the cardinals.

Well I'm a southerner ( I live in Davie, Fl) and I love people from anywhere! and relatives of mine have not had their car keyed or gotten teased for their yankee accents??
YES! it was not all about slavery!!! JESUS! that was a minor side issue...The bulk was economy and through where train tracks would run and stuff not just slavess...I mean the northerners didn't care too much for the slaves anyway just so you know...
People like watch movies and have just goten totally hypnotized that South=Racist, inbred, rednecks...It's all hollywood and the media...People SWEAR that southerners are totally persecuting them because they might be visiting from the north....Um yeah....Have you ever thought that maybe your car getting keyed was a coincedence ma'am? Does it HAVE to be that someone didn't like you license plates so they keyed it? Come on! Only a mentally ill person who thinks everybody is after them would think something like that...I live in the south and I know a lot of southern people obviously and they are all very nice to people here and to outsiders alike...I think you need to broaden your horizon a bit and start thinking for yourself...When something bad happens to you, don't just automatically blame it on the southerners because they didn't like the fact that you are from the north....And BTW, How old are you?!? Because if you got teased about your yankee accent like 40 freakin' years ago, then of course you were gonna get teased...We were just coming out of the civil rights movemnet and yes back then they did not like blacks or northerners, but now things have changed a lot...North People are stuck on something that happened in the south first 100 years and then 50 years ago with the civil rights movement. We've gotten over it...You guys are the ones stuck on the issue... THey need to get with the program and realize that everything is different. We live in 2007 Just like y'all do...not 1963...

Depends, If the answerer is one of many juveniles who show up here on a daily basis, say this person stinks or that team stinks, I usually feel sorry for them and chalk it off as Doesn't have a clue. so F If the answerer is one who is merely putting in their point of view offering their opinion well that is their right, so no grudge. so E If the answerer personally attacks me, well then that is a whole different ball game, that is when I block the loser and while I don't call it a Mega Grudge, I don't care to see what they have to say or ask from here on out. But I don't thumb down them, that is a waste of time in my mind. so A If the answerer attacks a contact of mine, I put them in the Mega Grudge category as well. I have always said, I am the first one to poke fun at myself, so there is no need to be mean.

A lot of it has to do with the whole 'carpetbagger' image of Northerners who moved to the south to prosper off of what the South had built for themselves and lost. They were resented for coming down south to prosper off of the misfortune of the southerners during reconstruction.
Also, the union soldiers did a lot of damage to people's personal property, burning homes, etc. Most of the south was ravaged by the war, while the North was not. Northerners were seen as intruders and were not wanted. Their presence was viewed as being an occupied territory by the enemy. Many still hold this sentiment today against "Yankees."

Some people down here don't know that the civil war is over. They are just stupid rednecks.
Just to play devil's advocate, I used to visit my friends and college roommates in CT, ME, and other "Yankee" states. My friends were always nice, but I met plenty of people that ridiculed my accent, told me to my face that I just sounded dumb, and implied that I was an ignorant hick. So, maybe some of them just had a bad experience up North.
On the other hand, some men found my accent to be quite attractive, so I never had to buy a drink at a bar. ;-)

It's all because of The War of Northern Agression.....some folks just NEVER forget...
And the entire war was NOT about slavery as some comments seem to think

It's really sad and I know exactly what you mean. People are not nice when we visit the "South" for vacation. I was raised in NY and like to travel in US but people are not always friendly. On the other hand, I won't say that everyone is rude. Even though we face double stereo type (Muslims from NY), me and my wife met some great people in down south and became good friends with them.

I think it is mostly because a lot of the people from the north think that the people from the south are a bunch of inbred retards. I mean have you ever watched a movie where they tried to talk like people from the south? We don't talk like that.

Because we whipped them in the civil war.
Now they don't have free labor. While they sit around doing nothing all day.
Now they actually have to do their own work.
They have held a grudge since the end of the war and it is instilled in them.
Oh well we don't care what they think of us because we won the war.

Ask a Southerner. I think its because the South lost the war.
And might have something to do with getting rid of slavery.
