Heat and vibration are the main factors in shortening the battery's lifespan, also batteries do not like to be totally discharged and overcharged, so the condition of the charging system is important. Cold reduces the battery's capacity but it does not by itself shorten the lifespan. Most will last 3-5 years, some more some less.
