It's on 99 Cavalier and I'm taking the tranny out.

i have all ready disconected the three bolts from the flywheel and i want to make sure that the torque converter is back far enough in the bell housing so that i dont bugger up anything when i take out the trany

you have it unbolted from the flywheel thats all you have to worry about when taking the tranny out, when putting it back in you have to make sure it is seated good in the tranny and set back from the bellhousing.

You have to take the converter out with the trans. There should be 3-4 bolts or nuts attaching it to the flywheel. If you don't remove the converter with the trans, you will have a very hard time removing the trans and could possibly destroy the converter seal.

Once the bolts are removed securing the torque converter to the ring gear, the torque converter will stay in place. Just pull the engine ahead a little before lifting it out.
