Ethnicity is based on national or cultural groupings and race is based on physical characteristics.. there are "officially" three races described by anthropologists: Caucasian, Mongoloid, and *****. Because race is based on physical characteristics, race is greatly a social construct (etc). Studies have shown that there is actually greater physical variation within "races" than between them. In addition, physical variations tend to NOT occur abruptly as you go from one region to the next but are more of a gradual fashion. The terms race and ethnicity are often used interchangeably in todays society but they have two very distinct meanings.

Ex:

Puerto ricans have a mixture of white, black, hispanic, etc.
race: varies
ethnicity: puerto rican or Boricuas

Italians
race: Caucasian
Ethnicity: Italian

Chinese
race: mongoloid
ethnicity: chinese

also, ASIAN INDIANS though we classify them as asian indians actually belong to the caucasian race.

Race is loosely base on skin color: Black, White, Yellow, or Red; when, in fact, all races include all colors. It is a genetic factor. Ethnicity is one's cultural heritage, usually associated with a country of origin; Italian, German, etc. The only difference is the phony ethnicity "African American", associated only with Black people in America. Since there are many different countries, races and cultures in the continent of Africa, there is no such true ethnicity as African American.

Race is a color like black white etc..........Ethnicity is where you are from. If you are Italian you are white and if you are Irish you are white, so white is your race, Italian or Irish is your ethnicity. Jamaican people and African American people are both black but ones ethnicity is Jamaican and the other is African American (or American)

i agree with foresite

ppl often confuse that hispanic is a race, it isn't, the ppl of hispanic countries are white/asian/ or black. hispanic is an ethnicity. that is why ppl are all confused when ppl say hispanic is the leading minority. they're like "where are all these hispanics" hispanic is their ethnicity, they have another race.
