I thought Christmas all around the world marks the birth of Jesus Christ and is symbolic of Christianity. So why do atheists, agnostics, people who claim to be Christian but don't attend church celebrate and observe this holiday for Christians.

Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and other religions have their own religious holidays. Why are these holidays not celebrated in America?

My friends were wondering about this strange trend in America?

America considers itself to be Christian in concept. While that is not historically factual it is still the common belief. Based on that concept and the business practice of commercialism and a user society, America has molded the two beliefs (Christianity and Commercialism) into one big spending spree. Christianity or at least the inherit concept of it is quite lost in the holiday spirit. The celebration is more giving and getting than it is in reflecting and adoration. Based on that philosophy all faiths and beliefs celebrate the holiday season and take advantage of the time off from work.

Most people cry so loudly about how they aren't religious or don't believe this and that, but buy them a gift especially something nice and see if they turn it down! My mom had this lady at her job that was supposedly a Jehovah's Witness and refused to participate in BUYING a gift for the secret santa by claiming her religion yet gladly ACCEPTED the gift she got. She would also participate in holiday parties and eat the food that was served there as well.

Now if you are so into your religion, wouldn't you just not go to the party because it has religious affiliation or is tied to a religious occasion?

In America, Christmas not only celebrates the birth of Christ, but Santa Clause as well. Santa isn't a religious figure so non-religious people can celebrate.

Because it's traditional.

Why do brides wear white at weddings?

(And technically, Christmas is a pagan celebration anyway. All the traditions are from earlier cultures and religions.)
