If you get it from the source, you would be safe. Some places will also provide you with a hash (MD5) so you can compare with the file you downloaded to make sure there was no changes to the file. You should have anti-virus software running when you install and run anyways, it will help detect anything that shouldn't be there.

(But, as a side note, if you're on a dialup connection, friend, be prepared for a LONGGGGGG download, as it's a beeg ol' thing! I finally decided it was worth my while to buy the CD from Amazon. Now I'm on DSL and it's not so bad.)
It's a whipper-snapper of a package, though!

very well respected piece of software that has never been associated with any viruses etc. Just make sure you are downloading it from www.openoffice.org to be sure it is official
