Microsoft was so caught up with trying to beat Sony and release the Xbox 360 before the PS3, they didn't take the time to actually test out the consoles and they just rushed the Xbox 360 out. Also, it is because of poor console engineering that the Xbox 360 overheats.
A PS3 can be on for days and it will never overheat. Sony put higher quality in their consoles and as a result, the PS3's don't overheat.

A lot of the issue is poor ventalation. If you allow the 360 to breathe the system runs fine. The 360 is very powerful but the original systems have overheating issues because the system didn't have enough coolent inside. As long as you keep the area around the 360 clear the system will not overheat.

I agree with the poor venthilation and also the fact that the power source is HUGE. You might wanna get a cooler for your 360, but I recommend the one that goes on the bottom of the 360, because I had the Nyko one that went on the back of it and it kept giving me the red ring of death. (Although Nyko is a good 3rd party brand)

Everyone Blames It On The Systems...
Its A KNOWN FACT THAT IT OVERHEATS BECAUSE OF YOU!!!!
IF EVERYONE DID NOT PLAY IT FOR 15 HOURS STRAIGHT THEN MAYBE IT WOULDNT OVERHEAT. STOP PLAYING FOR A LITTLE WHILE. YOU'LL LIVE!!!!

Manufacturing defect? The Wii's hardware isn't nearly as prone to overheating because it's not as complex, and the PS3 is bigger. More complex circuits generate more heat per unit volume. It's the same reason that computers 30 years ago didn't need heat sinks, but now we need all sorts of tools to dissipate heat, fans, heat sinks, even liquid cooling units.

They rushed it when they designed it because they wanted to get their product on the market first.
