The commentators on Boston Dirt Dogs seem ready for Ellsbury to go, which I agree makes no sense. Manny and Theo do not do the same recreational substances, I guarantee you that. Gagne has been offered arbitration so that if anyone signs him, the Red Sox get a draft pick from the signing team.

I think trading Ellsbury for Santana would be a big mistake. Our starting rotation is good already, and if we get Santana we would have like 7 starting pitchers. Even though Schilling and Wakefield are kind of old and Bucholz and Lester are kind of young, that is more than enough for starters. Also, although Ellsbury isn't as great as Crisp in the field, he is very good, and he is much better at the plate. He will have a lot of good years with the Red Sox if he stays.
I sort of doubt that Gagne will want to play with the Red Sox, so I'm not really worried about him. I think that he had such a bad end to this season that he isn't very popular and won't want to stick around. He also wants to be a closer, and he can't replace Papelbon so, the Red Sox are just giving him arbitration for the draft pick. Even if Gagne does stay, I bet he will do much better in 08.

Well studies have shown that first year players coming from another team for the Red Sox do poorly. Pitchers throughout the last 10 years have thrown a 4.56 Earned Run Average for their first years, and batters have hit .267 in their first years. It's very risky to offer Gagne a deal, as he seems to be a little overrated. If I was Terry however, I would sign Eric Gagne a deal, because he is such a clutch pitcher, and I have some trust in his '08 success.
Now for Jacoby, I agree that its stupid to be even THINKING about letting go of him. He hit .430 in the Playoffs, and .345 in his first 30 games during the regular season. This guy can also run as fast as Rickey Henderson, maybe faster. The Red Sox management should keep Gagne and Ellsbury and find another way to get Johan Santana, even though we don't really need him to win another World Series.
Our pitching rotation is strong enough with Beckett, Schilling, and Matsuzaka, it's good enough to win 100 games, but we could win 110 games with Santana.
My Vote: Try to get Santana, but not to hard.

They offered him arbitration; this was smart because they will now get an extra draft pick as compensation when he signs elsewhere. Ellsbury is a great potential guy but they have to offer good talent to get the real deal in Johan...it will seem like a loss at the beginning but if you see Johan dominating for the Sox then you will love the deal.

They offered Gagne arbitration and when he turns it down (he will because he wants to be a closer somewhere else) then the SOX will get a suplementary draft pick when he signs somewhere else because he is a Type B free agent.
