The overwhelming majority of patients on dialysis are either elderly, or have a multitude of medical problems that prohibit employment. I was on dialysis for just over a year in my early 20's, did about 6 months of hemo and the rest in peritoneal dialysis, before I had a kidney transplant. I still went to school full-time and worked part-time. The peritoneal allowed me alot more flexibility, but it's not for everyone. I had trouble with fatigue, but I think being so young worked with me. I'm now 40, and if I have to go on dialysis again, I probably will only work part-time. I lost my kidneys due to chronic infections, and nothing like diabetes, so the lack of concurrent illnesses probably helped me, too.

It is possible, but challenging. I am on the waiting list for a transplant, I am on dialysis because of end stage nephritis. I do home dialysis - 5 times a week, 3+ hours per treatment. I used to work 50 hours a week, and went non stop. Now I can get about 35 hours in a week, but I am pretty much fatigued all the time. The problem with doing dialysis in a clinic is it is usually during the day, and after my treatments I was exhausted, so as others have said, treatment days are pretty much shot for work. A lot depends on why the person is on dialysis and how motivated they are to push themselves.

I don't know any dialysis patients who are working. They're either all retired or on disability because the dialysis sucks up 3 days a week. He could try to find something part time, but finding a job that will let him work only on the days he doesn't have dialysis will be slim and none.
